Our List of Top Ten Granada Things We Love
Our top ten Granada attractions aren't easy to describe. Because, for the most part, our love of Granada is just a feeling...
But we have often been asked what are the things we like most about Granada. And so here is our complilation of top ten Granada things to look out for - listed in aphabetical order.
The Climate
Of course - the climate! The grey weather in England was one of the main reasons for us moving here. And the blue skies over Granada seem to have a brightness all of their own. With warm sunny days and bright blue skies the days are longer and the mood is brighter.
The Fiestas
Before I knew better I thought Fiestas were a waste of time. Now I know how they raise the spirits and help everyone to feel as if they are all moving in the same direction of life. Some notable fiestas are Cruz de Mayo, the Granada Jazz Festival and the San Juan Fiesta.

The Miradors
A Mirador is simply a place which affords a view of the surroundings. And there are many such places in Granada. Probably the most visited is the Mirador San Nicolas. From it you can see the Alhambra, the whole of Granada and the Sacromonte area. This is definitely a mirador not to be missed.
The Flamenco
We've seen flamenco performed in different parts of Spain but the rawness and emotion shown by the gypsies from the Sacromonte just have to be seen to be fully appreciated! And, once you have experienced the "real" dance and music of Granada, perhaps you will include them in your own top ten Granada things to watch, too.
The Food
Being married to Babs has helped me to become a real foodie. The strong and the subtle flavours we can get in the city's restaurants provide all the excitement that tastebuds could ever want. In Granada you can choose from the whole range of food, going from rustic and traditional Spanish food all the way to "fine" dining. A good way to explore what is available is to try a Menu del Dia. And, as well as Spanish food, you can also enjoy Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Lebanese, Morroccan and all the variations in between.
The Health System
I guess that "health care" normally only becomes a pre-occupation when one gets older, but having been in hospital twice since we moved here (because of a broken ankle and a hernia) I can vouch first hand for the excellent health provision provided in the city.
The People
The two things that fascinated me after coming to Spain were the strong sense of family that the Spaniards have, and their unique sense of humour. The Granadinos generally are a happy, and an attractive, people who take pride in sharing their city - and themselves - with others. When you visit Granada city, just take advantage of the open nature of the people here and enjoy with them how they just love to share their beloved city.

The Places of Interest
Practically everywhere you go in Granada you will find something of interest to see and enjoy.
The monuments include the world famous Alhambra, but whatever mood you are in, you will always be able to find something that captivates your feelings. Visit any of the the many the plazas (squares), but be sure to see Puerta Real and Bib Rambla. And investigate the fascinating old Quarters of the Albaicin Moorish), the Realojo (Jewish) and the Cartuja.
The Shopping
There are many independent shops in Granada where you can find interesting and unique items to suit your wants. Go to Mesones, Alhondiga, Ganivet Angel, Gran Via, Recogidas and the Albaicín for the best shopping. For handmade guitars go to Cuesta de Gomerez. Throughout the City there is an assortment of craftsment putting their own stamp to tiles, pottery, furnishings, rugs, marquetry and food. Every available material, including gold, silver, bone, ceramics and wood is worked to perfection. Don't forget to visit El Corte Ingles either, we have three El Corte Department Stores in Granada, each one with its own character. And, of course, Granada has a good selection of Supermarkets to supply everything you could possibly want.
The Tapas
I was tempted to include tapas in the "food" section (see above), but tapas is more than just food. It is a tradition. And unique to this part of Spain is the Tapas of Granada. Once you have enjoyed tapas in this city you will be able to see why Granada could eaily be considered one of the best "food-finds" in Spain.
Apart from all the activities above, you can also go skiing, go to the Science Park, you can play Ten pin bowling, visit the The Arab Baths, attend the various Exhibitions, or just dive in and look at out Top Ten Granada Things To Do. On the other hand, though, if the mood so takes you, you could do as I do and just sit at a café and enjoy watching the world go by.
We've lived here for over eight years now and the city has grown in our minds from just being a place to go when we want to get something, to being an addictive fix we need to get on a regular basis in order to feel complete.
And once you have spent some time exploring our Top Ten Granada attractions I would be surprised if you don't start feel exactly the same!
