Tapas in Granada

Get free food with your drink

I love tapas in Granada...

Sitting in my favourite city with a drink and a tasty snack is hard to beat. And best of all - when the snack is free - the world is my oyster....

The origin of the "tapas" is not clear... some people think it was all started by barmen covering their drinks with a plate to keep it free from flies.. and then small portions of food were added to the plate to help improve trade.

Others think the practice of giving tapas came from a decree of King Alfonso X of Castile who believed that eating small portions of food while drinking alcohol improved health.

Tapas in Granada

No matter what the origins are, enjoying tapas in Granada helps to bring my favourite city to life. What more enjoyable way is there to pass the time of day or night?

Tapas from Granada can be a savoury pork in a delicious sauce served with bread, or potatoes with garlic mayonnaise, a pizza, or even a simple plate of olives. In some bars you choose the tapas and in others it is just presented to you, free, with your drink.

And when you order another drink - you get another different one.

But beware, some bars only give free tapas if you order an alcoholic drink (or non-alcoholic beer). And some bars include tapas if you order a soft drink (coke or Fanta for instance). Click on tapas in Padul for more information about what qualifies for tapas.

And once you have tried a tapa, if you like it, you could buy a larger portion.

Choices of tapas may be written out on the menu, or on a blackboard near the bar, or, if the tapas are displayed at the counter you can simply point to the ones you would like to have.

How To Get Your Own Tapa

Each bar has its own special dishes and, no doubt, if you give yourself enough time to savour the many flavours, you will find out which dishes you like best, because you will definitely get tapas in Granada if you buy an alcoholic drink ...

Where to go for good Tapas in Granada

To enjoy a variety of Granada tapas head for Calle de Elvira, which is near Plaza Nueva, or go to Las Navas Rosario which starts near Granada Ayuntamiento (The Town Hall). Walk down either street (or both) and look for the most popular bars - they are the ones to go into first!

The best times of day to get tapas are between 1.00pm and 3.30pm and then again from 8.00pm until around midnight.

Tapas from Granada is famous the world over, in fact it has even been featured in a recent article in The Guardian. The article picks out several bars in Granada which offer free tapas.
