Who wants some oranges from Padul? They are juicy, sweet, delicious and cheap!

There's nothing better than eating oranges from Padul. Especially at this time of year.

Walk around our village during orange harvesting season, and you will see sacks of oranges laid out in doorways - these sacks are "signs" to show you where you can buy your own oranges in Padul. The picture below shows the front step of a cafeteria in Padul which is advertising the fact that it sells oranges and lemons.

And you will see the same sack-signs outside the ferretería (iron-monger), estanco (tobacconist), and even private houses.

The groves where Padul oranges are grown are situated in the Lecrin Valley (Padul is the gateway to the Lecrin Valley - the Valley of Happiness). And the Padulian shopkeepers typically have family members who own an orange grove or two - and so, why not let your fellow villagers enjoy the tangy sweet taste of some freshly picked oranges?

A sack of oranges will cost you anything from 2 to 4 euros depending upon the size of the sack. And when you get them home and start to eat them you soon realize just what wonderful tastes there are in oranges from Padul.

But why are they so delicious?

It's the combination of climate and soil that make them taste so good, resulting in the unrivalled colour, juiciness and flavour that, I believe, give our oranges the edge. But I would be the first to agree that I am biased!

But don't just eat our oranges for the taste! They are also one of Nature's Superfoods and are cram packed full of nutritients, vitamins, fibre and pectin.

Healthy Eating

A typical orange will give you up to 90 milligrams of vitamin C, which is ideal for fighting colds, helping to heal and fight ageing, as well as improving blood circulation. And the B vitamins contained in an orange will help your "nerves" and improve your all round general good health.

A lot of the oranges grown locally are sold as "oranges for the table" (oranges for eating) although some are used to make fruit juice, which is then sold on to much of Europe. In fact the advertising company Bray Leino of Bristol, England, has just finished creating its new run of advertisements, which tell the British people just how juicy spanish oranges are.

But where does the word "orange" come from? Well, it refers to the colour, of course, but for many other regions of the world, the Sanskrit word ‘narang’ is used as a root for the word "orange". For instance the spanish word for the colour and the fruit orange is naranja.

So, once you have bought a sack of oranges in Padul, what can you do with them?

A favourite way to eat oranges is just to peel them and then eat them segment by segment. Another way is to cut them into pieces and use the orange as a salad accompaniment, using segments in small pieces and/ or making a dressing with freshly squeezed orange juice with lashings of freshly ground blck pepper. Delicious.

Pesonally, I love an orange cut into pieces and served with other pieces of mixed fruit along with a fruit yogurt with sultanas sprinkled on the top - for me that's Double Delicious!

My favourite fruits by far are the oranges from Padul, at any time of day.

So I must ask you.. when it comes to eating oranges, how do you like to eat yours? Let us know!
