Try a menu del dia in Granada

...this guide will help you choose
where to go and what to eat

If you go for a menu del dia from Granada (the menu of the day) then you can expect to receive a good meal at a very reasonable price.

It's a way of enjoying the tastes of Granada. But you also get the added advantage of maybe eating a plate of something that you probably would not have chosen to buy.

When we lived in England, the main meal of the day used to be eaten in the evening. But since living in Spain we have adopted the Spanish tradition of having our main meal in the afternoon.

Eating during the afternoon provides a break and also gives me a natural lead-in for siesta time (a fifteen to thirty minute sleep in the afternoon) which then sets me up for the rest of the day.

This arrangement also fits in with our bed and breakfast routine as most of our guests will go out during the day and then come back to enjoy one of Babs' special meals in the evening.

When is the Best Time To Eat?

A menu del dia in Granada is served at lunch time from Monday to Friday at most bars and restaurants.

A "Menu" (pronounced men-oo) typically consists of a choice of three or four starters (premio plato), a choice of three or four second courses (secundo plato) and choice of half a dozen puddings (postre). You also get the option of having a coffee or tea instead of a pudding if you prefer. And this is all for a set, lowish price which usually includes bread and a glass of wine, beer or water.

Prices vary but a menu del dia in Granada will normally cost somewhere between six to twelve euros.

Sometimes the menu will be written onto a blackboard outside or inside the restaurant, or maybe it will be written on a separate page in "The Menu" (la carta).

What to do if it isn't even written down

There are also a few restaurants where the choices of the menu del dia of Granada are not written down anywhere.

In these instances, just ask the waiter, "¿Que hay para menu?" (kay eye para men-oo? - "What is there for the menu del dia?"). He will then proudly rhyme off the choices of the day for you. In Spanish.

The waiter will normally say.."Por el premio...." (For the first course) and then tell you what your choice is for the first course. It will often include a soup and salad but can also include fish, meat or pasta.

After you have made your selection the waiter will then tell you about "El Secundo..."

Naturally, you will choose your pudding or coffee at the end of the meal.

The "main sized" first course will often be the same size, or even larger, than the second course. And so you get two decent sized portions, which can be quite filling.

If you don't speak Spanish very well the waiter will happily explain, and/or repeat the selection until you have "got it". The thing to remember is that most Spaniards actually enjoy helping "foreigners" to understand and speak their language and so you will really be helping to make his day as you persist in trying to order your meal.

There Is Always a Way...

In the earlier days when my Spanish was poor, I would usually consult my Spanish/English dictionary before a meal, making sure that I had certain words fresh in my mind... and then, listening out for those words, I would say "Si!" and nod my head as I heard the waiter say the ingredient that I wanted to eat.

Main ingredients to listen out for are
  • Pollo (pronounced POH-yoh) meaning chicken,

  • Carne (car-ne) for pork,

  • Chuleta (choo-lett-a) for chop (usually a pork chop), and

  • Albondigas (al-bon-di-ga) for meat balls.

If I saw someone eating a dish of something that seemed good and that I would like for myself I have also been known to politely point to the diner's meal, nodding and smiling and then point to my mouth. Most waiters will understand exactly what you want...

All in all, having a menu del dia in Granada can be good fun, tasty and filling.

Typically, the menu del dia of Granada is served from around 2.00pm until 4.30pm, and you can take your time to eat and enjoy it. For most Spaniards this will be the main meal of the day. And quite understandably too. It is a substantial meal and in the evening a tapas or two could well be enough to last you until the next day.

One thing you will notice in many Granada restaurants is how the other diners are very friendly. They will often say "Que ha proveche" (Enjoy your meal) to you as they pass your table to sit down themselves..

There are lots of good restaurants for you to try. And if you aren't sure which one to choose, just opt to eat at the one which has most Spaniards eating there.. That is always a good sign that a good menu del dia from Granada is awaiting you.

For ourselves, some of our favourite restaurants to have a menu del dia in Granada include..
  • The Kiring. this is a Japanese restaurant in Calle Parraga opposite the Church of San Anton.

  • The Nuevo Restaurante in Calle Navas.

  • Even though they don't do a menu del dia, we always enjoy the free buffet meal for 10 euros at the Hotel Navas which is on the opposite side and a little farther down the street from the Nuevo Restaurant... and finally,

  • In Calle Duende, opposite El Cortes Ingles, there are two Restaurants which offer a delicious menu del dia in Granada. These are the Restaurant Posada del Duende and the Restaurant Casa Salvador.
"Ha proveche." Enjoy!
