Whether Hiking In Spain, Enjoying Guided Walking Holidays Or Taking A Hiking Tour Of Spain....
...You Get The Ideal Choice of Terrain In The Granada Province
For those thinking of hiking in Spain, enjoying guided walking holidays or taking part in a hiking tour of Spain the area around Granada often ranks highly as a choice of venues.
One of the main attractions of this beautiful area for those taking a hiking tour of Spain is the wide variety of landscapes that are available within a very short distance. It is an ideal area for walking holidays.
The orange and lemon groves of the Lecrin Valley offer their uniqe scent, only rivalled by the almond groves when their flowers give off a rich hyacinth type perfume.
The mountainous Alpujarras and Sierra Nevadas offer wonderful views around almost every corner when hiking in Spain. Here you can select from a wide range of guided walking challenges from very easy to extremely difficult.
And, as a real contrast, the rolling lands of the Vega of Granada, and further south, the lake at Bermejales are well worth exploring as part of all walking holidays and any hiking tour of Spain.
In this area, ideal for hiking in Spain - especially in spring, there is an abundance of flora including vibrant indigenous flowers as well as rare orchids. The groves of olive, almond, orange and lemon trees offer a wide variety of new and ancient trees, some of them hundreds of years old.
For those interested in wildlife there can be seen and bee eaters as well as the occasional Spanish ibex or wild boar.
Local Guided Walks
To help our guests to get more out of their walking holidays, we have arranged with Dave and Jean, who have been guiding hiking in Spain walks in the area for almost 10 years, to provide a selection of guided walks for Los Limoneros guests. Look below and make your choice.
To help you make your selection of walks for those who enjoy hiking Spain, each walk has been given a grading between 1 and 5. A grading of 1 is very easy and a grading of 5 is very challenging.
Half Day Walks
Walk To The Ermita Del Santo Christo Del Zapato
This walk follows a winding route up through the pines at Pinos Del Valle. Visit the charming Ermita (shrine), which is clearly visible way above the road to the coast.
At 1059 metres (nearly 3,500 feet) the views acrss the Lecrin Valley are spectacular. To get up there is a bit of an uphill slog (about 40 to 50 minutes) but it is well worth it for the views at the top. In June or July this walk can be timed so that the normally spectacular sunset (see photo below) can be enjoyed from the high viewpoint. This is hiking in Spain at its best. Meet at the Harlequin in Talara at 10.00 a.m. or as advised for the sunset walk and then be driven to the village of Pinos Del Valle to the start of the walk.

Explore The Beautiful Lecrin Valley
This is an interesting half day walk which goes through the beautiful olive groves and citrus plantations of the Lecrin Valley (Valley of Happiness). The walk starts at 10.00 a.m. and leaves from the Plaza in Murchas village. First the group walks through the citrus and olive groves which surround the tiny village of Murchas and then head down into the valley towards the ruins of the ancient Moorish castle (Castillo de Lojuela). This well-known landmark sits atop its spectacular rocky foundation high above the Rio Durcal.
A short scramble off of the main track takes you right up to the castle itself. On leaving the castle, walk down into the valley of the River Durcal and follow it downstream until the bridge is reached. After crossing the river you carry on following its course even further into the heart of the valley towards the village of Restabal. From there you turn northwards and then it's uphill all the way back to Murchas.
