Get free books on the bus in Granada without really trying

Free books on the bus?

Catch a bus in Granada this year and you'll be able to join in with Granada's "Stories to read on the bus" scheme.

What better way to pass the time going from place to place than by snuggling down into a comfortable seat on one of the air-conditioned buses and reading an interesting story?

Altogether there are 12 book titles planned for the scheme.

Commencing last week, 12th March 2010, a new title will be released each month. Distribution includes a total of 9,000 copies for Granada city and the remaining 3,000 copies for Granada Province. That makes a total of 144,000 books being given out during the year.

These booklets will be available upon request. Many people will want to keep each title as it becomes available to make up their own individual Free Book of Short Stories.

And it's quite alright to do this. If you want to take a book home with you, just ask the bus driver and he or she will give you one to keep.

Actually, these "books" are not fully fledged books at all. They don't have hard covers and spines. In fact they are more like booklets. But that's good, because the way they are made, they are easier to slip into your pocket or handbag.

This annual free books on the bus programme actually started in 2002. And each year since then it has proved highly popular.

The book(lets) are being made available by the City of Granada and the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Culture. They want to make good literature available to as many people as possible.

What a great idea.

If you manage to get to Granada this year, why not catch yourself some free "books" on the bus.
