We love flamenco in Granada
These cyclists are free to challenge us

"The ultimate challenge - Flamenco Vs The bike!"

When people think of flamenco in Granada, they often think of gypsies in their flamenco dresses, with stamping feet and clapping hands...

Sometimes they will have roses between their teeth... and they will be accompanied by stamping, clapping partners.

Now, everyone should think again, because tomorrow, May 13th 2010, there is a flamenco event with a big difference!

In a special competition, flamenco star Rafael Amargo (see photo below right) and his company are being challenged to a flamenco "duel" by five competitive cyclists from Spain, Japan, France and the USA.

Bike flamenco in Granada - a rare competition

The challenge will be to dance to the different flamenco styles:- Man Dancer against Bike Dancer!

Of course, you will have already realised that a bike cannot "dance". And so the real aim is to do bike tricks in time with the rhythms of flamenco, in competition with the real live stars of the Flamenco art.

The challenge is the "Red Bull Flatland Flamenco in Granada Challenge" and it is all taking place in the beautiful Palacio de los Cordova in Granada. Admission is free!

Side Note:- Flatland refers to the sport of doing tricks on a BMX bike without letting the feet touch the ground. Flamenco refers to the musical style which originated in Granada by gypsies living in the Sacromonte region.

To make things more interesting, each rider challenger has a different cycling style..

Spanish Viki Gomez, who is the creator of the challenge considers Flatland Flamenco to be "a struggle between the mind, the physics of gravity and inertia of the balance". He is reputedly one of the best "Flatlanders" in the world, see this video.

Also competing are American Jesse Puente and Frenchman Mattias Dandoi.

Everyone is anticipating a demonstration that combines the skill, improvisation and passion to the limits of both dancers and cyclists.

Rafael Amargo, the star flamenco dancer, who has performed in Garcia Lorca's Poet in New York in New York's City Centre, claims that this competition will "show how emotions can be expressed and fused with cycles to the beat of flamenco".

I just can't wait.

Address of the venue:-
Palacio de los Cordova
Cuesta del Chapiz 4
E-18010 Granada
Spain
