The flamenco in Granada on wheels competition results can't be what you might expect

"Flamenco on bikes? Whatever next!"

A special competition incorporating flamenco in Granada on wheels took place at the Hotel Palacio de Los Córdova in Granada on the evening of 13th May.

Flamenco star Rafael Amargo and his company were challenged to a "duel" of flamenco by five of the world's top BMX bikers from Spain, Japan, France and the USA.

An appreciative crowd of admirers at this Redbull Flamenco Flatland event thrilled to the world's top BMX cyclists dancing - on their bikes - to the rhythm of flamenco music. You can see full details on Cyclists challenge flamenco in Granada.

The whole event was a great success, and no wonder. Situated in Granada, my favourite city, and with the Alhambra Palace in the background, the event was inspired to be a winner before it had even started.

Actually, once the event had started, it was obvious that it was going to be more of a display than a direct competition.

Rafael Amargo, the Granadino flamenco artist, explained that the intention had been to "Provoke the audience", and, indeed, that is exactly what happened.

Apparently, the whole idea of combining flamenco with bike moves was conceived by Viki Gomez, one of the organisers and competitors. He was practicing his bike jumps whilst listening to flamenco music and it occured to him that the two aspects of the art - flamenco music and bike flatland - would fit together really rather well.

You can see Viki in a recent Flatland competition at Viki Gomez BMX Flatland.

Side Note:- Flatland refers to the ability to do tricks on a BMX bike without touching the ground with the feet. Flamenco refers to the musical style which originated in the Sacromonte area of Granada by the gypsies living there.

Those Taking Part

Amongst those taking part with Viki Gomez at the Redbull Flamenco Flatland event were Jesse Puente from America and Frenchman Mattias Dandoi.

Jesse Puente
Jesse originates from Oregon. The Flatland style of cycle riding appealed to him because of the creativity and artistry the discipline encouraged. In 1994, he won 2nd place in the world championship held in Germany.

This video shows Jesse winning second place in the world's Flatland competition in 1994. More information can be found at Jesse's website Jesse Puente.com.

Mattias Dandoi
Mattias is described by his friends as being talented and awkward, funny and stupid, as well as being a little insane. He has a great cycling skill, being crowned for the second time as champion of the world of BMX Flatland.More information can be found at Matthias' website Matthias Dandois Blogspot.com.

And Now For A
Different Type of Biking

To complete the picture of skills on bikes, I am moving from Flatland to City. Here is my favourite biking video. I hope you enjoy it..This is a video filmed in Glasgow, Scotland, of Danny MacAskill pushing the biking barriers. Turn your speakers on, and enjoy...

RedBull Flamenco Flatland Travels
Throughout Spain

The whole RedBull flamenco in Granada on wheels event was such a success that it is planned that similar events will be held in other parts of Spain.

And may the "pushing the boundaries" of creativity long continue. After all, it is through being open-minded that flamenco in Granada on wheels was made possible in the first place.

Do you think that the Flatland vesus Flamenco was a good idea? Let us know what you think by clicking on comments.

I have two bikes, a road bike and a mountain bike. I know I am fond of them, but when it comes to dancing, I think I would prefer dancing with a real live person...
