Enjoy An Authentic Night Of Flamenco in Padul

Visit the cueva (cave) for flamenco in Padul to get an authentic night of flamenco typical of the Sacromonte area of Granada

Flamenco inPadul
Flamenco is an essential part of Spanish culture. It is described as an art of two parts:- music and dance. Flamenco embodies one of the deepest musical traditions of Spain and Flamenco in Padul is an integral part of this tradition of Spain.

It originated in Andalucia before the period when the Christians reconquered Portugal and Spain from the Moors. And because of this historical culture, flamenco songs still depict the suffering experienced during the persecution of those times. Traditionally, flamenco was used by the gypsies in the Sacromonte area of Granada as a way of entertaining themselves.

When performed from the soul, flamenco can deeply invigorate and move the listener.

Visitors to Spain often assume that a flamenco is a dance. However, the essence of flamenco is actually the song.

To enjoy "real" flamenco (as opposed to the tame entertainment described as flamenco often shown in hotels), guests at our bed and breakfast in Granada had to go to the "caves" of the Sacromonte or other specialist venues such as Torcuatos in the Albaicin.

However, on the Barriada La Paloma in Padul, we now have our very own "cave" to offer flamenco to those who enjoy seeing and hearing the baile (dance) and canta (song) of flamenco.

La Peņa Flamenca de Perico opens its doors on Friday and Saturday evenings for authentic Andalucian gipsy nights likened to - by those who know - "the purest style of the Sacromonte from Granada". At these times Padul and flamenco become as one.

Here you can see the expressive solo dances, recognised by sweeping arms, stamping feet and clicking fingers or clacking castanets. And you can hear the soaring melodious voices of the cantores (singers).
Jorge and his father
Jorge Parejo Extramera, the owner of La Peņa is the son of the outstanding flamenco artist of Padul - Joakin Parejo Alarcon (now deceased). Jorge is offering the opportunity to visitors and locals alike, to keep alive these envious traditions of flamenco in Padul. This is certainly a night not to be missed.
