Enjoy a magical night of flamenco in the Alhambra open air theatre

"Magic in the Alhambra."

Last night we thrilled to flamenco in the Alhambra.

After a meal at one of our favourite restaurants Babs and I and four friends wound our way to the Generalife theatre at the Alhambra in Granada. It was 9.45pm when we got there and the place was buzzing.

We followed the crowds into the Alhambra's Generalife gardens and took our place in the open air theatre. The excitement and anticipation was uplifting as we waited for Lorcas's Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads) to start.

Flamenco at the Alhambra - waiting to start

This famous flamenco at the Alhambra is based on ten of the romantic poems written by Frederico Garcia Lorca and choreographed by the renowned and legendary flamenco artist Cristina Hoyos.

The ten poems used in the show are
  • Romance de la luna (Romance of the moon),
  • Luna (Moon),
  • La monja gitana (The gypsy nun),
  • Reyerta (Quarrel)),
  • La casada infiel (The married unfaithful one),
  • Prendimiento de Antoņito el Camborio (The catching of Antonio),
  • Muerte de Antoņito el Camborio (The death of Antonia),
  • Romance de la Guardia Civil espaņola (Romance of the Spanish Civil Guard),
  • Romance de la pena negra (Romance of the black sorrow), and
  • Romance sonámbulo (Sleepwalking Romance)

The characters really come to life in the show which features an exciting combination of flamenco dancing and singing accompanied, in parts, by background recitals of Lorca's poems.

The scene is set in a gypsy camp below road bridges upon which occasional cars travel. And in the camp, and on stage all the time, are three singers and two guitarists. The effects are truly magical.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the performance of flamenco in the Alhambra, and the high spots for me were the singing and dancing nuns and the murderous members of the guardia civil (civil guard). The effects were magical and truly made me forget where I was.

Crisina Hoyos flamenco star

Cristina Hoyos, the choregrapher and one of the performers, born in 1946 and pictured above, believes that...

"You can't understand flamenco, it is something you feel. The person who is sitting on the chair (each member of the audience) must feel that what you are doing is something out of the ordinary".

Even though she is older than the rest of the cast, and she retired from flamenco because of a bone problem, she brought a whole new light to the evening with her interpretation of "Romance de la pena negra" (Romance of the black sorrow) in this special Alhambra flamenco.

You can find out more about her by reading a recent interview with her in "de Flamenco".

Tickets Available

Lorca's poems are choreographed to flamenco ballet and performed each year in the Generalife - the gardens of the Alhambra. Advance tickets can be bought through El Corte Ingles and at the Alhambra itself.

This flamenco in the Alhambra is not the typical dancing and singing that you see and hear in the clubs and caves of Sacromonte and Granada. It is the telling of a story filled with desire, passion and raw jealousy, leading - typically for Lorca - to a violent death.

But it is all done with sensitive and magical taste. And that, is Lorca!
