Enjoy The Cruz de Mayo in Granada. It's One Of The Most Enjoyable Fiestas of the Year

Make time to visit Granada on the 3rd May for the festival of Cruz de Mayo. Held on the same date each year it is a day of fun and entertainment for all ages.

Granada fiestas are amongst the best in Spain and this one - for many people - is the best "free" show of the year.

Cruz de Mayo, literally translated to "Cross of May", where flowers, crosses (crucifixes), ceramic tiles, copper kitchen utensils, and pictures intermingle to make an eclectic mix of colour and cheer. The fiesta itself has no history in religion, although each of the displays contain a cross (crucifix). No, the fiesta is basically a big celebration of Spring and the months to come. As always, the spanish excel at changing a spring day into a big, big celebration.

Put into the mix the flamenco dancers and the music and clapping through the city and you can get an idea of what is in store.

Of course, not all the flamenco dancers are professionals. In fact the majority of them most definitely are not. But the whole day gives a wonderful excuse (reason) for ladies young and old to don their flamenco dresses and parade the streets.

As you go into Granada prepare to be immersed in the atmosphere of FIESTA. In 2007 there were no less than 39 "stations" to choose from. And at almost every single one there was music, often blasting out at discotheque volume.

This is a day when throughout Granada you will find an air of fun, laughter and lightheartedness.

And even though there is an element of competition from the "exhibitors" (and why not, because each "cross" is judged and the winners later notified) it is the pure enjoyment of involvement and welcome which will come to you most effectively.

And what you will come across - and maybe join in with - is lots of rhythmic clapping and lots of singing. And if, by some unfortunate coincidence it is raining - you will also see some very amusing efforts of the participants dancing while holding an umbrella aloft.

And, in good Andalucian tradition, it is all free.

Cruz de Mayo - out of all the fiestas of Granada, this is a day not to be missed.
