Enjoy The Cruz de Mayo 2011 in Granada. It's One Of The Most Enjoyable Fiestas of the Year
"The Day of the Crosses in Granada - Wonderful!" Make time to visit the Cruz de Mayo in Granada on the 3rd May this year for the Festival of the Crosses. Held on the same date each year it is a day of fun and entertainment for all ages.
Granada fiestas are amongst the best in Spain and this one - for many people - is the best "free" show of the year.
Two of the Crosses on Cruz de Mayo fiesta in Granada
Cruz de Mayo, literally translated to "Cross of May", where flowers, crosses (crucifixes), ceramic tiles, copper kitchen utensils, and pictures intermingle to make an eclectic mix of colour and cheer. The fiesta itself has no history in religion, although each of the displays contain a cross (crucifix). No, the fiesta is basically a big celebration of Spring and the months to come. As always, the spanish excel at changing a spring day into a big, big celebration.
Put into the mix the flamenco dancers and the music and clapping through the city and you will get an idea of what is in store.
Of course, not all the flamenco dancers are professionals. In fact the majority of them most definitely are not. But the whole day gives a wonderful reason for ladies young and old to don their flamenco dresses and parade the streets.
This Is What You Will Find
As you go into Granada prepare to be immersed in the atmosphere of FIESTA. Altogether there are 63 crosses this year, 14 will be in the streets and squares, 22 will be in various yards, 10 in schools and look out for another 17 in windows throughout the city. And at almost every single one there will be music, often blasting out at discotheque volume.
During the day there will also be extra performances in the Plaza del Carmen near the Ayuntamiento and in the Plaza de las Pasiegas near the Cathedral. These celebrations will include performances by:- - Tatiana Garrido,
- The Dance Group of the Association of Residents of the Lancha del Genil,
- The Rociero Choir of the Brotherhood of RocĂo de Granada and the
- Municipal Group of regional dances.
This will surely be a day when throughout Granada you will find an air of fun, laughter and lightheartedness.
There is bound to be an element of competition from the "exhibitors" because the stations will be judged on Monday evening. But you are bound to feel and sense the pure enjoyment of involvement and welcome from Granadinos and visitors alike.
And what you will come across - and maybe join in with - is lots of rhythmic clapping and lots of singing. And if, by some unfortunate coincidence it is raining - you will also see some very amusing efforts of the participants dancing while holding an umbrella aloft.
And, in good Andalucian tradition, it is all free and will continue right the way through until 2.00am on Wednesday morning.
Cruz de Mayo - out of all the fiestas of Granada, this is a day not to be missed.
