Use the best car hire in Spain to enjoy a better holiday with these top tips
"Think smart. Use the Best Car Hire in Spain."
Some people don't need the best car hire in Spain. They choose to stay right there, where there are enough activities to keep a whole family amused for a couple of weeks.
However, having said that, holidaymakers will get to see and do more if they have a vehicle to use. They get to venture further afield and are spared the hassle of using public transport and cabs to get out and about.
So if you are thinking of hiring a car, why not use the best car rental available and get the most out of your holiday.
There are three steps to getting the best car hire Spain...
- Selecting your car,
- Picking up and using your hire car, and
- Dropping it off to the collection point when the holiday is finished.
With the right sort of knowledge, these three steps will help you get exactly what you want - a good deal and the ideal car for the type of holiday you want to have.
Booking Your Car
The best and easiest way to arrange your car hire is to do it in advance and on the internet. When you are online you get access to the widest range of vehicles, deals and options.
You will need a credit card. And if you pay for your car hire (and any extras - see below) online and in advance you get the peace of mind knowing that an integral part of your holiday arrangements have ben sorted.
Decide whether you want a one way car hire or a round trip deal. Some of the best car hire in Spain companies have a network of pick-up and drop-off points to allow you to take your car back to a different point which is more convenient for you. This is a boon as many people who tour parts of Spain and don´t necessarily want to go back to their starting point just to return their car.
What size car do you want to hire? Don't just go for the cheapest or the largest car. Better to think about what sort of distances you intend to travel and how many people plus luggage you want to fit into it.
Do you want a radio or CD player? Radios don't always come as standard with some cheap car hire companies, and so if music is important to you, it is best to check.
Do you want "Sat Nav" equipment? This can be a boon when travelling in a foreign country, but don't forget that you will need the full postal address or post/ zip code of your final destination in order to be able to input it.
Are these extras important to you?
- Child safety seats or booster seats? These can be in big demand during school holiday periods.
- Maybe you will need a wheelchair if one of your party can't walk for long periods.
- Ski racks could be important if going skiiing?
- Air conditioning is a boon in the summer months and
- Automatic transmission may be just the thing for you.
These are all best pre-booked when making your reservation.
Are there any "Specials" available? Some companies offer reduced rates for weekend or weekly bookings and if your dates or plans are flexible, then maybe you can adjust your requirements to get a discount.
Will the hire company accept your driving record? Quite a few companies check driving records when the customer has arrived at the office to collect his car and so anyone whose driving records don't meet company standards face rejection at this late stage. Even if you have confirmed your booking reservation in advance, you could still be disqualified from renting a car for violations involving seat belt law, reckless driving, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident or driving with an invalid licence. If at all you aren't sure, make a point of asking when you book.
Are there any hidden surcharges or extra charges which could bump up the cost of hire? Will they require a deposit or refundable charge? Are there mileage fees or taxes to pay?
And check what will happen regarding breakdown cover and what you are liable for. Who should you phone if you have a problem? Are they available 24 hours a day or just during office hours. Hopefully you will not have any problems, but knowing what to do if anything does go wrong will give you peace of mind.
Best to book your hire car as early as possible to benefit from any special deals that may be available. You want the vehicle of your choice to have the best car hire in Spain.
Collecting Your Car
Make sure each driver has his or her driver’s licence. Remember that in Spain you need to produce valid licences (not copies).
At the point of pick up, ask if there is a possibility of an up-grade. At best, you could be offered a car with better specification without paying more. At worst, you may be asked to pay a little more for a more suitable car. In the latter case you decide them whether the upgrade will be worth the extra charge. You just can't lose.
When you actually get your hire car, check around it to ensure that any damage is noted on the disclaimer sheet. Report anything you have a query about to the hire agent before you drive away. The extra time this takes is well worth it for the peace of mind you will get during your holiday, and it will also prevent any unfair charges when you take the car back.
Another thing to remember is that all vehicles in Spain are required to carry two warning triangles and two reflective yellow jackets (which should be put on before getting out of a broken-down car on an Autovia.) It is important to check that the jackets and triangles are included, and where they are so that you can acces them easily if needed.
Check the situation regarding fuel. If your car is supposed to be full or half full when it is returned, then that is what the petrol gauge should read before you drive away. In some hire companies, and especially late at night, attendants can sometimes forget to fill up before collection!
Remember, if you aren't happy with the car, or the state it is in, you are within your rights to request an alternative. Make sure you get the minimum of what you pay for.
Dropping The Car Off at the End of Hire
Make sure the required amount of petrol is in the car when it is returned. If the hire company has to fill the car because you didn't leave enough fuel in it you will be charged a premium rate per litre of fuel. It is much better to top up the car to the desired level yourself before handing it in.
Does the car need to be clean and tidy when you take it back? Some large companies have been known to levy a "cleaning" charge if the car is muddy or if the interior is dirty.
Finally, remember to make sure you haven't left any personal belongings in the car. Check the glove box, car pockets, hidey holes, seats and floors for anything that might have fallen and rolled under a seat.
