Is this the most important spring festival in Granada?

This Saturday 3rd May is the festival of the May Crosses (Cruces de mayo) in Granada.

At almost every square you will see crucifixes of all sizes decorated with all things Spanish.

And if you you look closely you will also find temporary bars erected near some of the crosses to help spread the festival spirit. Locals and visitors alike will congregate there until late at night drinking, eating, singing, playing music and dancing.

Every square is worth visiting, but particularly try to go to the Moorish quarter (Albaicn) and the El Realejo barrio areas which are highly recommended.

If at all possible, granadinos will be celebrating this day to the full.

Cruz de Mayo - possibly the most important Granada celebration in Spring.

San Sebastian goes home this Saturday

This Saturday San Sebastian returns to his ermita "home" for the rest of the year.

Since the 19th January the statue of Padul's patron saint has been standing in the Parish Church, looking over the village. But his time out is nearly over because this Saturday evening he will be taken back, in procession, to the Ermita de San Sebastian on Calle Real. And he will stay there until the next procession.

The saint's return "home" is celebrated by a large firework display and celebrations. Time and place? The Esplanade Carpa Municipal near the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) in Padul at 9.00pm on Saturday 2nd February.

Is there no end to the celebrations in our village of Padul?

Hope you can come. We'll look out for you there!

From grapes to wine in one day - with friends

Yesterday we harvested our grapes - in between showers!

In true Andalucian tradition, Juan and Paco, two of our Spanish friends, elected themselves to come to our bed and breakfast guest house in the early morning, inspected the grapes in our vineyard and proclaimed that "Today" was "The Day"!

We immediately rang around our "volunteer" harvester friends to let them know that we were winemaking today, and asked if they available to come and help.

They were. And we did.

All the grapes were cut, pressed and the juice put into barrels for their initial fermentation before 6.00pm. And in between times we even made time to enjoy a leisurely lunch with our friends.

This surely is life in Padul at its best.

August in Granada

This August in Granada I have broken with my normal tradition. Hence, welcome to the last day of August and my first post since July.

It felt a little scarey, but I did it. A whole month without a blog!

Having become more and more Spanish since moving to Padul 6 years ago, this year I finally adopted the local tradition of devoting more time to the needs of my self and to the needs of my family during August.

But I'm not sure whether I've done the right thing by joining this Spanish August-Is-Holiday-Time Mindset. For more information about this, read the comments in our current
<a href="http://www.bed-and-breakfast-granada.com/Real_Spain_Newsletter-holiday-Granada.html"target="new">Newsletter.

And so I am asking you what you think...

Do you think that it is right that Spaniards should take more time off work during August? Or should they - as a nation - spread their holidays during the year?

Just let us know what you think by clicking on <a href="http://www.bed-and-breakfast-granada.com/blog-comments.html"target="new">Your Comments

See you in September!!

There's more to the Sacromonte than just Flamenco

Most people think of Flamenco when they think of the Sacromonte in Granada, but on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th August you can enjoy two great spanish films.. LOS TARANTOS (The bewildered) and EL AURA (The Breeze). The shows start at 10.00pm and cost just 3 euros each. Venue is the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte (The Cave Museum of the Sacromonte). These are opportunities to enjoy evenings with a difference in Granada.
