Visit the arab baths in Granada and help wash away your troubles
Earlier this week we went to the arab baths in Granada.
Actually there are three arab baths in Granada (see below) but we went to the Aljibe de San Miguel.
After we arrived, we were each given a fluffy white towel, offered the use of all the pools (there are eight all together), and asked did we want an optional massage.
I chose to have a fifteen minute massage, but when I go again I will definitely book for a half hour session.

We waited in the reception room until our entrance time of 10 o'clock and then we went through the Alhambra shaped wooden doors, down the corridor and straight into the changing room where there were secure lockers to leave our belongings. When changed we went on into the pool area.
The lighting is subdued with soft music playing and is very relaxing.
Around the central pool, which contains cooled water, is a selection of pools of differing shapes and depths, each with a different warm to hot temperature.
The recommended "arab baths of Granada" process is to go into one of the warm pools and then into the cool one, into another warm pool and then into the cool pool.... and so on, until you have experienced everything.
Whenever the mood took us we went to the sitting section at the side of the bathing area and enjoyed the mint tea and sweets which had been prepared for us. Drinking the tea is recommended because it is better to maintain fluid levels whilst bathing.
At the appropriate time we were each called from the bath area to be given our massage. I was given the choice of a back or a leg massage - the normal option for a fifteen minute massage. I opted for my back to be given the treatment.
When I had first booked my massage I had been concerned that it might be no more than a gentle rub. I needn't have worried. My back was firmly and expertly given a deep massage. It was very relaxing, and I understand that, whether your preference be hard or soft massage, the masseur will do his or her best to accommodate your wishes.

When my fifteen minutes was finished I was advised to shower off the massaging oils and then continue with my bathing experience.
As with all good things, our time eventually came to an end and so after another shower we returned to the changing rooms and then on with our tour around Granada.
The Arab Baths of Granada
Of the other two arab baths in Granada, one is the Hammam.
The other arab bath, the El Banuelo, is actually more of a museum, showing an original bath house from the 11th century. It is situated beside the bridge of Cadi on the Carrera del Darro. This is open from Tuesday until Saturday, from 10.00am until 2.00pm. Entrance is free for Europeans.
In my opinion, it is better to visit the historical El Banuelo before you go to have your own arabic bath experience, and then you can imagine yourself, as in time gone by, experiencing the healing and refreshing waters of yester-year.
Bathing sessions at the Aljibe start at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 hours and bookings can be made by phoning 958 522 867. It can be found in the centre of Granada, next to Obispo Hurtado Street.
The Hammam is situated behind the former mosque at number 16 in Calle Santa Ana (Telephone number: 902 333 334).
