Riofrio, An Oasis Of Fresh Fish, Riverside Walks And Weekend Markets
We were very pleasantly surprised the first time we went to Riofrio. The village itself is small, having only 300 inhabitants, and is nothing more than a few streets large. But the river gives it a special character all of its own.
Riofrio (Cold River) is just a couple of minutes from the Granada to Malaga A92 Autovia and has been associated with trout fishing since the mid 1600's. It wasn't until 300 years later, however, in 1964, that a very successful trout farm was established.
Now, the village is an ideal place to go for.... - Anyone who enjoys fishing.
Just stand and gaze in the river and watch the fish swim by. Of course, a permit will be needed if you want to catch the fish, but the rewards could well make the effort worthwhile as the record brown trout caught here is a whopping 5.2 kilograms.
- Anyone who loves to eat good fish (especially if it is trout).
Probably the most popular dish served in the town restaurants is barbecued trout although, as far as we could tell, each restaurant offers a very wide choice of fayre for anyone who doesn't want to eat fish.
- Anyone who loves the countryside.
The land around is ideal for cycling and walking. In fact, the information centre in the village can give full information about the Green Route (Ruta Verde de Riofrio) which offers guided walks along the river. Starting time for the walks are usually noon.
- And just to cater for everyone, the weekend craft markets make Saturdays and Sundays even more popular!!
The working of the fishfarm supports Riofrio, employing 20 people and "feeding" the ten restaurants each year with an excess of 500,000 kilograms of the freshest of trout you could hope to get anywhere.
The fishfarm also raises sturgeon, which are used to make a delicious beluga caviar.
But all that aside, why not just go for a walk along the river. On a hot sunny day it is extremely relaxing - and cooling - wandering along in the shade of the willow trees and the pines. It certainly makes for a very enjoyable day out.
When we were there we visited one of the restaurants and had - of course - barbecued trout. It was cooked to perfection with a lovely crispy skin and deliciously moist flesh. Paradise!
If you decide to go to Rio Frio it is also worth visiting the nearby old Muslim town of Loja which is just 4 kilometres away. Loja boasts a railway station, a ruined castle in the centre of the town, and a locally famous fountain with 25 spouts, called El Fuente de la Mora (The Fountain of the Moorish Maiden).
But, for me, Riofrio has it all. A relaxing day in the cool shade of the river and fresh trout cooked just the way I like it. For me, that is perfection.
