The Padul Players Could Be Just The Group To Listen Out For If You Enjoy Good Music With A Difference

Ask each of the Padul Players what sort of music they enjoy and you will get three different answers. But, in essence they simply enjoy good music. And that is what makes things so interesting.

As well as being good friends (Dave O and Jean are married to each other) and enjoying music in their own right, they also enjoy getting together and performing their special mix of music.

The Padul Players are a trio living in Padul and Murchas villages near Granada and have raised money for charities including Cancer Research and the Children of Almuñecar as well as performing recently at a local street party.

The sound of the guitar, flute and cornet produce an unusual but enticing combination. Much of their repertoire has had to be rearranged in order to get the sound just right because the instruments play in different keys.

If you have been lucky enough to hear the Padul Players then you will know exactly what we mean.

The Padul Players Line-up

Dave Wilkes on Guitar

Dave W soloing on guitar David learnt to play guitar when in his early twenties using Bert Weedon's Play In A Day book. But it was only when he moved to Spain and brought a Fingerpicking Guitar tutor book with him that he taught himself to play using a fingerpicking style. Dave plays guitar, electric keyboard and piano but hasn't played keyboard music in Padul since moving to Spain.

Musical likes: Dave enjoys listening to most kinds of music. Current favourite artists are Coldplay, Janis Ian, Take That and Beverley Knight, but he says that if you were to ask him in a few weeks, his favourites could well be different.

Musical ambition: To be able to play Flamenco well, although his practice time is limited because of the demands of his and Babs' bed and breakfast accommodation at Los Limoneros.

Dave Oxley on Cornet

Dave O with cornet Dave owned and ran a diving equipment shop in Surrey before coming to Spain almost thirteen years ago. Dave´s parents were both Salvation Army Officers and so he grew up with music and has been involved in music, bands and groups most of his adult life. He started playing when he was 5 or 6 years old but had lessons at the age of 7 years. Besides the cornet Dave also plays the trumpet, most other brass instruments, tenor recorder and the harmonica but, he says, not very well!

Musical likes: Orchestral show music. His favourite instrumentalist is Jimmy Shepherd who was a Brass Band Cornet Soloist.

Musical ambition: To be able to continue playing Trumpet/Cornet to a reasonable standard.

Jean Oxley on Flute

Jean with flute Jean was a pharmacist in England and came to Spain almost thirteen years ago. She started to learn the recorder at age 5 and to read music. Brass instruments followed at about 7 years and when she left home to go to college she joined the local brass band where she met Dave. Jean plays the euphonium, flute, piano, and is currently learning the guitar. She can also play most of the brass instruments.

Musical Likes: Jean enjoys Brass Band and Orchestral music, but prefers to play rather than listen. She likes James Galway, Julian Bream and Robbie Williams.

Musical ambition: To improve on the instruments she is currently playing.

Both Dave O and Jean were players in the Padul Maestro Falla Band and made an excellent contribution to Padul music. They are currently part of a quintet called Grupo de Cámara Durcalí. Dave and Jean both share their love of music and still practice every day.

Each of the padul players play solo as well as playing in combination with the other members. They play for special events and have an interesting and enjoyable repertoire.

If you would like them to play for you, just contact the Padul Players with the details.
