Enjoy Granada for golf. The Medina Elvira golf club is exceptional
It is not only ideal for players of all abilities, it is environmentally friendly as well
Going to Granada for golf is easy for me. After all,I live here.
But last week I went to Medina Elvira golf club for the first time with Steve (son), Jake (grandson) and Dave (friend).
We arrived at about 8.45am so that we could take advantage of the early morning August temperatures. At this time of day the air is cool and clean and it's a real pleasure to be out. The four of us had booked two buggies to share at the special offer all-in price of just 30 euros each.
We booked in at the desk and then went down to the 18 hole par 72 course via the lift and we started off the game in earnest.
It was fun.
Medina Elvira is my kind of Granada golf club and it is bound to suit players of all abilities..
Granada golf at the Medina Elvira course
The course has a variety of long and short drives, challenging water hazards and three beautiful lakes.
The groves of evergreen and deciduous trees around the course give the whole area a peaceful and tranquil feel. Birds soar overhead and their singing can be heard in the background while the golf goes on. Amongst the most noteable birds I saw whilst playing were the hoopoe birds which seemed relatively tame, compared to where we live. They allowed us to walk quite near to them before flying off.
The trees surrounding the fairway, the La Galeria forest, and those along the banks of the River Columera have all been incorporated into the site. They give the game a special quality that you don't often get from a golf course in Southern Spain. Indeed, when the course was being designed and constructed in 2006, the trees and existing topography were incorporated into the layout. The result is a really attractive course.
A lot goes on behind the scenes
Mind you, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. And, for me, these hidden activities are just as important as the things on the surface.
For instance, the large drainage points direct rainwater (and the grey water from the nearby housing units) to specially constructed storage reservoirs. This water is then used to irrigate the fairways and greens. The water hazards and lakes are connected one to the other via underground pipes to make optimum use of the water, and this system also prevents an accumulation of nutrients that could otherwise cause a dense growth of algae and other organisms in the water.
One thing I do remember seeing is an automatic weather station. This forecasts and controls the amount of water needed on a day to day basis for optimum care of the course. Apparently this brings about a 10 to 15 per cent saving in the amount of water needed to maintain the course.
The greens are exceptionally well manicured and the course was a pleasure to play.
Our game lasted several hours and we enjoyed every minute of it. For anyone wanting to go to Granada for golf, I can thoroughly recommend this course
