My top five Granada flamenco clubs

...where the magic of guitar, voice and dance
combine in an almost unbelievable way....

"Great flamenco straight from the heart of Granada."

Many people who come to Granada for flamenco want to head for the Sacromonte area. And why not?

After all, this is where the magic of flamenco brings together guitar, voice and dance in this gitano (gypsy) created art form.

Another option for those wanting to enjoy Granada flamenco would be to go to one of the flamenco "shows" of which there are many in this wonderful city. There are also bars here in Granada which have flamenco performances on a regular basis. Many don’t charge admission and simply raise the prices when there’s a show on.

But to fully experience Granada flamenco in the live, raw state, you can't do better than to head along to one of the flamenco clubs of Granada. This is where people from all walks of life mingle to enjoy, share, and even take part in this ongoing homage to the wondereful world of "Flamenco".

Below are my top five Granada Flamenco Clubs..

Granada flamenco - for me, it's the best

The Peña Flamenca La Platería

A Peña is a flamenco club, and here at La Platería, they present good quality Flamenco performances throughout the year.

Even if you only want a drink it is worth going to the Peña Plateréa in the Albaicén. As you will see when you get there, the place is filled with an impressive array of photographs of flamenco and its artistes.

This peña is one of the oldest flamenco clubs in Spain, and so, naturally it is in Granada, where flamenco was born. Dating back to the 1940's it has lasted so long for a very good reason. It is run by lovers of flamenco for lovers of flamenco and will give anyone a real night to remember.

Their website gives an idea of what treats are in store. Just go to Peña Flamenca La Platería
  • The entrance fee is just 8 euros with a drink included and it is open on Thursday only.

  • The address is number 7 in the Placeta de Toqueros.

  • Telephone is 958 227 712, 958 210 650 (bar) and 958 227 712 (office)

Eshavira Jazz and Flamenco Club

For the "real deal" and a true taste of Granada flamenco, go to the Eshavira. It is a smokey mix of life, music and energy and is not for the fainthearted but if you want to experience a different aspect of Granada then don't miss it.

Here you can see and listen to some of the greats of flamenco. The building itself is a labyrinth of passages, rooms and areas where you can truly absorb the spirit of Granada.

Sunday night is Flamenco night with jazz performances on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Eshavira is also open every other night with excellent music playing while you can sit, talk and enjoy a drink. But on Sundays, have yourself a flamenco night to remember.

  • Entrance is 8 euros with flamenco performances most Sunday nights. Start time is around 11 o'clock.

  • From Calle Azacayas, turn off Calle Elvira and go down Calle Postigo de la Cuna to number 2.

  • Telephone 958 29 41 25

Huerto del Loro

Of my top five Granada flamenco clubs perhaps Huerto del Loro has the most comfortable and relaxed ambience, although when the singing and dancing start your feet will start to tap and your whole spirit will beat to the rhythm of the music.

The "cave" has a vaulted ceiling to give good acoustics. There is also an outside terrace to sit at in the summer. At the Huerto you can enjoy a bank of excellent artists who perform in rotation with names such as Caramela la Chocolata (The Chocolate Caramel) to seduce and excite each member of the audience.

  • Flamenco shows are performed every night (except Mondays), entry 8 euros

  • Directions.. Go to the Plaza de Santa Ana and take the stairs up to Calle Santa Ana. Turn left and follow the "road" up until you reach Cuesta de la Churra on the right hand side. Just take the steps up to the club.

  • Telephone 635 639 567

The Upsetter

This club is set out as a typical gypsy cave, and hosts wonderful flamenco artists including the "Murcia Flamenco Festival" prize winning Sergio ‘El Colorao’ and El Niño de las Almendras.

The Upsetter has a central location and so it is one of the easiest to get to... and for those looking for something a little different, there is usually an after-flamenco show of Reggae type music to enjoy..

  • Flamenco Shows are held each night, Wednesdays to Mondays. Entry 12 euros

  • Near Plaza Nueva on the Carrera del Darro, 7

Tablao Flamenco Albayzín

This gypsy style cave, (tablao means a cave bar or club) is situated near the Mirador de San Cristóbal. It overlooks Granada from the west of the Albaicin and consistently provides excellent entertainment from the flamenco artists.

Here you will be guaranteed to get a true feeling of the Sacromonte and the gypsy surroundings. Included in the price is a free drink and an optional tour of about three quarters of an hour where you are guided around the Albaizin and the Sacromonte. And to help you further appreciate the different aspect of Flamenco, you will also be given a brief explanation and demonstration of the various aspects of this Spanish art form.

This is the highest priced venue on my list of top five Granada flamenco clubs, but be assured that you will feel that you have had value for your money. Visit their website to get a feel of the place.

  • Flamenco shows each night. The entry fee of 28 euros includes a tour of the Albaicín and a drink.

  • Carretera Murcia, Mirador de San Cristóbal

  • Telephone 958 804 646

Duende - That Flamenco moment of Bliss

I didn't really appreciate the various aspects of Flamenco when I first came to live in Granada. But now, it makes me feel so good when I am watching it. The energy and the connection it creates between mind and body makes me feel positively alive.

If you have already experienced good Flamenco and want to relive its pleasures, I recently came across an excellent audio cd called Duende which features Romero, one of the top performers at the Upsetter club.

And, of course anyone who hasn't yet enjoyed flamenco at its best then the Duende cd is well worth listening to.

Take your pick of flamenco and visit one of the many clubs, bars or tablaos. It doesn't really matter where you go, but for my money, Granada is the place to be and the flamenco has to be good!

If I have the priviledge of seeing you at some Granada flamenco, maybe we will be able to clap a fandango together!

Olé!
