Granada drinking water comes from the Sierra Nevada snow melt

But how much longer will it last?

I love Granada drinking water and I admit right now that this webpage serves a selfish idea.

Los Limoneros is not on "mains" water. We have our own well of spring water... and, believe me, it is very convenient to have pure spring mineral water on tap.

But the problem is that we, and thousands of other people in the area, are in danger of losing our water source. And this could cause the Padul Lagoon (Laguna de Padul) to eventually dry up and disappear.

The Laguna is the one and only wetland in Granada Province. It is also the most southern wetland in Europe. We cannot afford to lose it.

According to the Andalucian Newspaper The Olive Press, the Seville based company Aguas de Sierra Nevada plans on sinking a borehole and extracting up to 1,860 litres of Granada drinking water each and every minute from the Sierra Nevada's underground reserves. That's more than two and a half million litres a day!

This amount of water represents almost a third of all the bottled water which is sold throughout Spain, and is approximately ten times the amount that the 7,200 inhabitants of Padul consume each and every day.

A representative for the PDW (the Platform for the Defence of Water) claims that the water bottling scheme will do "irreparable harm to the area's most natural resource - water."

And yet, Aguas de Sierra Nevada has reputedly received a regional government grant of over a million euros plus a promised loan of almost two and a half million euros from regional government. And the council of Durcal (a nearby village) is also backing the plan because, they say, the project will create more employment in the village.

Things aren't right. And it is not only my opinion. The Izquirda Union is seeking an investigation through the Supreme Court of Andalucia.

Am I being selfish in objecting to this plan to extract Granada drinking water from our area for material gain?

I admit I am concerned because it will be us and our locality that will be affected.... but what do you think? Let us know by clicking on contact us.
