Spending Christmas in Padul can be likened to going back to the old and the real sentiments of Christmas

Christmas in Padul is a really special time. You've just got to be here to appreciate it.

The village is alive with excitement and has a real air of fun and enjoyment.

And, just as in many other places - including Christmas in Granada - the emphasis is on meeting up with friends, family and neighbours.

Merry Christmas

Our spanish friends tend not to send Christmas Cards as people do in the UK. Although spaniards may, perhaps, send a card to a special friend or member of the family if they don't expect to see them over the Christmas period.

Decorations are kept to the minimum as well, with just a belén (nativity scene) gracing the hall table. And maybe the head of the family will decide to brighten up one of the trees in the garden with lights and a few decorations. And that is it! Things are much more laid back here.

There is very little emphasis on the giving of presents.

I mean, why give someone a gift when you can be with them and share yourself and your friendship with them? Giving of yourself surely has much more value. Doesn't it?

Christmas in Padul is family time and Papa Noel (Father Christmas) will have called around to the house to leave some gifts for the children of the family. It truly is a family time.

But to help everyone enjoy Christmas in Padul to the full, here are just a few of the activities that were organised by the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) in 2007 to help people have a good Padul Christmas.

  • Saturday, December 22, Juvenile Gymkhana (10.00 o'clock) and Carol Singing Contest (21.00 hours)

  • Sunday, December 23, Christmas Concert (13.00 hours)

  • Thursday, December 27, Trip to Juveandalus (Starts at 10.00 o'clock)

  • Friday, December 28, The 8th Expedition of the "Inocentes" (20.30 hours)

  • Saturday, December 29, Acceptance of the letter from the King's Magician (17.30 hours) and - by the Childrens' theatre.. Do you have a red nose? (18.00 hours)

  • Sunday December 30, Grand End of Year Concert (13.00 hours)

  • Monday, December 31, Celebration of New Year's Eve in the Plaza de España near the church. Enjoy the free grapes and champagne courtesy of the town council

  • Saturday, December 5. The kings' Cavalcade (18.00 hours)

And next year is expected to be even better. Why not celebrate next New Year with us. Book into Los Limoneros, have a delicious New Year's Meal and then amble into Padul to enjoy the festivities there..

Full instructions are given for how to eat the grapes - you are guaranteed to enjoy the fiestivities

However, it is the 5th and 6th January which are the important dates for the Spanish - especially for those of us who are a little younger. It is on "King's Day" (6th January) when children traditionally are able to play with their toys which have been left for them the night before by the three kings.

We really enjoy the less hurried, "make time for the real values of Christmas" feel of life in Andalucia, and in Padul in particular.

We can really feel the genuine spirit of kindness and togetherness that reaches out for the families of the village. Christmas in Padul is special. We hope you get the opportunity to come and enjoy it with us.
