Spending Christmas in Padul can be likened to going back to the old and the real sentiments of Christmas

Christmas in Padul is a really special time. You've just got to be here to appreciate it.

The village is alive with excitement and has a real air of fun and enjoyment.

And, just as in many other places - including Christmas in Granada - the emphasis is on meeting up with friends, family and neighbours.

Our spanish friends tend not to send Christmas Cards as people do in the UK. Although spaniards may, perhaps, send a card to a special friend or member of the family if they don't expect to see them over the Christmas period.

Decorations are kept to the minimum as well, with just a belén (nativity scene) gracing the hall table. And maybe the head of the family will decide to brighten up one of the trees in the garden with lights and a few decorations. And that is it! Things are much more laid back here.

There is very little emphasis on the giving of presents.

I mean, why give someone a gift when you can be with them and share yourself and your friendship with them? Giving of yourself surely has much more value. Doesn't it?

Christmas in Padul is family time and Papa Noel (Father Christmas) will have called around to the house to leave some gifts for the children of the family. It truly is a family time.

But to help everyone enjoy Christmas Padul to the full, here are just a few of the activities planned by the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) for this Christmas, 2009.

  • Saturday 19th December, Carol Contest, in the Main church of Padul. Starts 8.00pm.

  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 21st, 22nd and 23rd December in the patio of the Ayuntamiento, concerts by students of the Padul Music School. At 7.00pm each day.

  • Wednesday 23rd December, Tattooing, face painting, Lots of fun and even Father Christmas may put in an appearance- from 5.00pm to 8.00pm in the Cultural Centre of Federico García Lorca.

  • Friday 25th December, Procession throuhg Padul, starting at 5.00pm

  • Saturday 26th December: Talent Concert by local bands in the Cultural Center Federico García Lorca starting at 8.00pm.

  • Sunday 27th December "The Story of Christmas" in the Garcia Lorca Cultural centre starting at 6.00pm

  • Monday 28th December the "Night of the Innocents" which is the Spanish version of April Fools Day. Prepare for fun! Starts at the Ayuntamiento

  • Tuesday 29th, Journey for the young ones to Fantasy Land

  • Thursday New Years Eve at La Plaza de Espana near the Church, free Cava and grapes to welcome the New Year in.

  • Sunday 3rd January, Concert at the Garcia Lorca Cultural Centre by the Maestro Falla de Padul. Starts at 1.00pm

  • Tuesday 5th January, The Grand King's Parade through Padul, starting at 6.00pm from hte Garcia Lorca Cultural Centre. Free gifts for all the children who would like to receive one

Why not celebrate next New Year locally and then amble into Padul to enjoy the festivities there..

“Nochevieja” or New Year's Eve is a special night for everyone. Just get - and eat - your twelve grapes to bring you luck for each month of the next year and drink champagne to toast in the New Year. This is The REAL Spain at it's best

Full instructions are given for how to eat the grapes - you are guaranteed to enjoy the fiestivities

However, it is the 5th and 6th January which are the important dates for the Spanish - especially for those of us who are a little younger. It is on "King's Day" (6th January) when children traditionally are able to play with their toys which have been left for them the night before by the three kings.

We really enjoy the less hurried, "make time for the real values of Christmas" feel of life in Andalucia, and in Padul in particular.

We can really feel the genuine spirit of kindness and togetherness that reaches out for the families of the village. Christmas in Padul is special. We hope you get the opportunity to come and enjoy it with us.
