Hands Around the Alhambra Palace

The Alhambra Palace - at the very heart of the Alhambra - was part of a very special celebration in 2007.

For many people, the jewel of Granada is the Alhambra, which sits on top of the Sabika hill at the end of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Sitting at approximately 700 metres above sea level, the Alhambra looks down over Granada city.

The Alhambra palace, its surrounding residences and the fortress complex is where the Muslim kings of Granada resided along with their courtiers. Now, the whole of the Alhambra is a beautiful museum in which you can see exquisite Islamic architecture and decoration.

The Alhambra and Generalife (the gardens of tha Alhambra) are listed as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. And the Alhambra was a candidate in the current election of the New Seven Wonders of the World!

To promote the Alhambra´s consideraton for election as a "new wonder", more than 5,000 supporters formed a chain and joined hands around the Palace in April 2007.

Each person occupied a metre (approximately) and the whole chain spread more than twice around the wall (the perimeter measures 2,500 metres).

Each applicant was presented with a free hat and t-shirt to commemorate the event!

The Alhambra was one of 21 monuments which voters around the world had chosen as the finalists. The final list of the 7 new Wonders of the World was announced in Lisbon, Portugal in July 2007.

In spite of all the enthusiasm and efforts put into the event by the people of Granada and all of us at our bed and breakfast accommodation, the Alhambra did not get voted in as a New Wonder of the World.

Nevertheless, the Alhambra will always be one of my favourite monuments in Spain. Which is your favourite? Why not let us know?
